Welcome to the latest weight loss treatment, in the form of a book “LOSING IT” by much loved Comic and Actress Helen Lederer.
Well known for her wit, for the past three decades she has appeared, performed stand up and also been a fixture on legendary sitcoms like “BOTTOM” and “ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS”. She is about to return to Channel 4’s “HOLLYOAKS” for a guest stint : reprising her role as the midwife who delivered Diane O’Connor’s twins and Tegan Lomax’s daughter. Lederer told The Telegraph: “I play an alcoholic midwife. I’m in ten episodes.”
LOSING IT, tells the story of Millie Tucker an agony aunt for ‘The Good Woman Magazine’ and a mother to a young daughter Mary, who is far away in Papua New Guinea. Millie is “in debt, divorced and desperate”. Indeed it is a story of many women as they get older, and we are led through this inevitable journey which is at times both poignant and striking many chords. It makes fun of the natural agonies of life, as it is a human on going struggle to continually change and make things better – why not approach it with a giggle!
I had the pleasure of spending some time with Ms Lederer and put a couple of questions forward :
Is ‘Losing It’ targeted at a particular audience?
The generation gap is closer now, there is certainly an overlap, it’s all very interesting the times we live in. It is much easier to connect with different generations, it does have a good appeal to a broad spectrum of people.
You have been dubbed the funniest woman on TV by Dawn French, is she one of your favourites?
Yes! I made her say that! What she actually said was that I was the “3rd” funniest woman in the country…. you know why!
How long did it take you to put the book together?
Well, do you know what ……this time last Christmas ( a year ago) – because I do other jobs I made sure I got focussed and wrote with a vengeance. I would wake up 7.30am and go on these writing binges till 10pm and just make sure I got the words down. This was an intense time I really loved. I really enjoyed the obsessive nature of it, just to get down and finally do it.
What would be your last book?
You Can Heal Your Life – by Louise Hale : Louise’s key message in this powerful work is: “If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed.” Louise explains how limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness, and how you can change your thinking…and improve the quality of your life!
Now this resonates so well with “Losing It”, we’ve all been at one stage in our lives on our own weight loss journeys – so this story does feel very close to home. We all get older and most of us will put on some extra weight along the way. With “Losing It” Helen Lederer guides us through Millie’s journey in a witty, entertaining and can we say butt clinching way! It is a highly recommended read.
Funny femail fiction at its best !
