Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Girl. Did you get that? Yes it’s reminiscent of John Lennon/The Beatle’s song ‘Revolution’ , those magnificent lyrics “…you can count me out. In.” Elton John and his music has always been forefront in my life story, strong childhood memories, I remember important moments from his songs, Beatles songs also have that same effect. Same. Same.
That In/Out thing well… that’s how I’ve felt about my career in PR. One part of me is passionate about the industry, the other side of me secretly wants to be a full time Journalist, taking on the world, one exciting story at a time. I am somewhat caught in the middle, a United Nations of sorts, wanting to please both, not to let any side down, hey let’s make peace!

What a journey it’s been though, for one thing 2019 has marked almost 25 years of working in media.. the stories to tell! The recent announcement of the Golden Globes nominations, really hit home that we are about to enter another riveting awards season. I have already predicted, Rocketman, Taron Egerton, Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Dexter Fletcher, Eddie Murphy, Quentin Tarantino, Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lopez …just some of the names that will shine in 2020. A lot of favorites and even some friends on that list, all so well deserved!

I take my mind back to 10 years ago whilst working as a Publicist in Connie Filippello’s office in London for the House of Versace, the excitement of the announcement of nominations for the Golden Globes got us on the phones trying to get major A list celebrities to dress for the ceremony. I remember how thrilled I was, when I managed to lock down Penelope Cruz and Angelina Jolie, even though all the time, at the back of my mind I was thinking how very much more exciting it would be to interview them on the red carpet! I still feel that way, and yet the Publicist side of me still craves to be promoting talent and talking about their achievements in their latest movie, book or music release…..! Something will eventually have to give, or is there room for both? It’s so much easier for journalists to make the leap into Public Relations, it’s harder oddly enough the other way round. Essentially though news judgment, handling deadline pressure and, of course, writing ability are all crucial in both professions, one has to hone these essential tools for a smooth and successful transition. Career changes can be scary, especially in an ever-changing and increasingly uncertain industry such as the news media. The switch from PR to journalism is more natural than one might think, one way of doing it is continuing to contribute and be a voice editorially, whilst still having a firm foot in the world of communications.
So that’s the journey I will take though going forward. Another extended stay in Los Angeles beckons, launches, parties, press events to attend, the merry go round starts again. The buzz is still so enticing, which side of the red carpet will I end up on?
I call Entertainment/PR and everything that surrounds “Captain Fantastic” (a roller coaster of expectations) and I’m the brown dirt cowgirl on big adventures, who seems to still enjoy the rodeo… on with the show!
